ON LONELINESS

When on my own in public I tend to walk around with my head down, oblivious to whats going on around me, and I'd rather stick my face in a good book than risk the chance of awkward eye contact on the underground.

Everyday I cross paths with hundreds of people I don't know, and although there may be the odd apology for accidentally stepping on someone's toe, or a polite "thank you" when a door is held open, how often do I actually spark up genuine conversation with a stranger? (Drunken slurs on the night bus at 4am don't count!) The answer is never, and what's odd is that despite being surrounded by other people, some who stand far too close to me on the underground for my liking, I often find myself feeling lonely.

I wonder how many new friends I'd make if having a chat with a fellow commuter wasn't so socially unacceptable; there must be millions of people out there who share similar interests to me, who's to say I didn't pass one of them in the street today? We live in an immensely guarded and anti-social culture, which is a shame because meeting new people is fun!

Yesterday I watched 'The Perks of Being a Wallflower', which touches on the subjects of loneliness, mental illness and struggling to make friends. (If you haven't seen it already then be sure to watch it, it's beautiful!) It moved me and also reminded me that everyone feels lonely sometimes. Nobody's life is perfect, no matter how fun, friend-filled and adventurous it may look on their social networking profiles.... but regardless, maybe we should all just be a little less judgmental, be more open and talk more.

OASIS PLEATED SKIRT FROM ZALANDO

These photos were taken over the weekend whilst it was still snowing, obviously! Unfortunately now most of the snow has melted away, leaving in its place patches of very slippery ice on the pavement; I've been wearing chunky soled shoes all week so I don't fall over! I was recently contacted by the online store Zalando who sell a wide range of products from womenswear to duvet covers, they offered me a product for review and I chose this rather lovely pleated skirt by Oasis.

I'd actually heard of Zalando before, having had them recommended by my Dad's girlfriend who I think shops with them regularly. The shopping experience was painless enough, as I said, they have a massive range across loads of different brands, so I did spend a lot of time browsing! They also have a really great variety of shoes. I settled in the end for this skirt because it's a lovely wintery colour and I really like the shape.

It's 100% cotton so has a quality, soft feel and doesn't cling to your bum like some skirts, I HATE clingy material, big no no in my wardrobe. Here I've styled my Oasis pleated skirt with my new Boden cashmere crew neck, worn over a PU leather collar blouse, black tights and studded creepers. I've also added a skinny waist belt which I think adds a little extra to the ensemble, bringing the whole outfit together.

Here's a whole other story - basically it was snowing so I had my head stuck out of the window watching it, when I noticed a squirrel in a tree at the end of the garden. I decided to get his attention and get him to come over to my window and...he did! I felt a little bad cos he looked cold and his tail was getting covered in snow, but he sat out there for quite a while, and even had a little wash! (I closed my bedroom window though just in case he decided to jump in!) When I looked out of the window again later there were about six squirrels playing in the snow, jumping from tree to tree!

VELVET CHICNOVA DRESS & KURT GEIGER SHOES

Whilst wandering down Portobello road the other weekend I couldn't help but pop into the Kurt Geiger store, and thank goodness I did, because I picked up these beautiful low heels in the sale! I'd actually had my eye on them since July so was delighted when I found them in my size reduced to just £49! I love the little sixties heel!

CASHMERE CREW NECK JUMPER FROM BODEN

It's my boyfriend's birthday tomorrow so this weekend his parents came to visit, all the way from Somerset despite the relentless snow! We decided to spend our Saturday afternoon wandering around Highate cemetery in the snow, it's such an intriguing place and it was absolutely beautiful buried under a blanket of white.

Admittedly what first caught my attention about the cemetery and prompted me to go there was the legend of the "Highgate Vampire", a story encouraged by a series of strange happenings surrounding the cemetery in the seventies...it's creepy stuff!

TARTAN DRESS: VINTAGE

Eventually we felt chilled down to the bone - no pun intended - so we headed to our favourite pub for a late lunch. I wore a vintage tartan dress, my new cashmere jumper from Boden, and my studded Topshop creepers, which have been really handy these past few days as they have lots of grip!

STYLE ICON: CLAIRE BOUCHER

Claire Boucher of Grimes has been on my style radar for quite a while now. With her fringe cut slightly too short and her ever-changing hair colour, her striking features and quirky style are how I imagine Tavi Gevinson to look in five years time.

Born in Vancouver in 1988, Claire, (better known as Grimes), started experimenting with music whilst at university, and since releasing her first album in 2010, her Japanese inspired electronic sound and alternative appearance have gained lots of hype in both the music and fashion worlds. Isn't it interesting how "anti-fashion" statements become fashionable?

I personally love her grungy look. Her part-shaven hair suggests a polite "fuck-you" to modern society's vision of beauty, it reminds me of the look skinhead girls adopted in the 1960's. Cool-ness aside though, she really is very beautiful and most certainly a style icon of today. What do you think of her look?

MEEMEE.COM: FLEC WINE JUMPER

If you hadn't seen already, e-commerce store MeeMee.com have recently re-launched, re-branding themselves with a more modern, fresh and exciting outlook with better products and excellent prices.

Just before Christmas I was asked if I'd be interested in reviewing something from their site on this little ol' blog of mine, and of course I was very interested indeed, itching for the chance to browse their new range! I chose this cosy looking Flec Wine Jumper. (Behold some photos of me jumping around in circles).

I love the "slouchiness" of this jumper; it's comfortable, practical and warm and so useful for those lazy skinny jean and baggy jumper days! It's a beautiful colour, perfect for the colder months but cheerful enough to get you through spring to, and it feels really expensive! I'm truly impressed with the quality of this item, I think it's the softest jumper I've ever owned! Here I've worn the Flec Wine Jumper over the top of my floral tapestry dress from River Island.

PORTOBELLO ROAD

Yesterday my boyfriend and I popped out to Portobello Road for a look around; believe it or not I hadn't actually gotten around to going to the market before! Although all of the little knick-knack stalls were great to rummage around, what really caught my attention was the side streets of colourful town houses, iconic to the Notting Hill area, they're so quaint!

PONY ANARCHY YEAR BOOK ISSUE 1: HAPPY BIRTHDAY

I have some exciting news! Back in September whilst jobless and feeling sorry for myself, I styled a shoot with the very talented photographer Iris Bjork in the hope of rekindling my love of living, creating something beautiful in the process. Styled by myself, this shoot was photographed by Iris Bjork, hair and makeup was done by Violet Zeng and we had the lovely Georgia from FM agency modelling for us.

Much to my delight, the images have been published in Pony Anarchy, a magazine that I personally LOVE. I've featured on their website before but it feels wonderful to have my work in the mag itself! See the entire issue HERE. (Please note, the phone used in the image below can be bought from Native Union.)
